ABOUT US

Our commitment to local weaving techniques and products.

Habing Filipino, a digital humanities project created and maintained by Associate in Arts students of the University of the Philippines Open University led by Arlene Mendiola-Acol, aims to promote our local weaving products to the fashion industry. Our goal is to present different weaving communities, the weaving techniques used, and the practical use of woven products. Part of this initiative is to provide information on how the local communities benefit from their creations and what type of support these indigenous communities get from both private and governmental organizations.

Enhancing the Humanities

Philippines’ culture and tradition are rich and extensive. From pre-colonial to the influences of its colonizers, Filipinos were able to nurture a wide range of local practices that are distinct to our region and community. One of these practices is weaving. Dating back to the 13th century, our ancestors maximized assorted raw materials to develop a wide array of weaving techniques and traditions. However, at present, using most of the weaving products are limited to making souvenirs, keepsakes of travels to the different regions of our country. Sometimes, they are also used as materials for clothes to be worn for formal celebrations, like weddings, graduations and often, for national occasions.
